Parent’s Summer Visit 2010

Parent's Summer Visit

Every summer my parents come over to Holland to visit. This is always great fun because I get to show them around the areas of Holland that I have discovered as well as be a tourist myself and discover a few new areas. This also tends to lead to a few funny stories. During an active week of theme parks, zoos, boat rides and more I have:

  • Proved myself as a man by winning a fluffy giraffe for my woman at the Efteling fair ground.

  • Experimented with live twittering from the queue of a rollercoaster (live twittering ‘on’ the rollercoaster did not go as smoothly even with the help of predictive text).

  • Drove my parents around in my girlfriend’s car. They had not ‘experienced’ my driving for 15 years but it seems the fear was not so easily forgotten. Every time my girlfriend handed me the car keys my father would ask, “Are you sure that is a good idea?”

  • Ended up with a few ‘patches’ of sun burn were I was not very ‘thorough’ with the sun screen.

  • Met my nemesis, a small monkey criminal mastermind at Apenheul who used his cuteness to lure me in so he could attempt to steal my camera. When that did not work he bit me and ran away. He shall be known as; Moriarty.

  • Witnessed my father empty a sashay of mustered into his tea when he mistook it for a sashay of milk and still drink the whole thing even after he realized his mistake. Apparently it was, “not too bad.”

  • Managed to completely confuse a waiter at a pancake restaurant (Full story here).

  • Head-butted a mosquito. It had been buzzing around my ear all night and when I suddenly threw my head of the pillow in frustration I felt the tiny blood sucker bounce off my fore head. It was unintentional but it had it coming.

  • Visited the city of Den Bosch and went on a canal trip that went ‘under’ the city. It felt like something out of a Dutch version of a Dan Brown novel (but less confusing and much more suitable for a movie adaption).

  • Bumped into blogger VallyP in a way that probably has her now worried that I am stalking her (standing outside her boat while my mum took photos).

  • Sailed the waters of Leiden with the most terrifying crew to ever raise anchor in Holland; my father in a pirates hat and my mother in a life jacket.

The Den Bosch canal trip sounds cool. I can’t wait to hear some of the other stories! As for your new nemesis, I think a monkey is a better choice than mine of a laundrette owner.

  2. Invader_Stu says:

Well I did have a hard time at first choosing between the monkey and the NS train worker who once closed the doors in my face but a monkey as a nemesis just sounds much cooler.

Den Bosch is really nice and the canal tour is really worth it.

  3. Lopa says:

Mustard in tea in stead of milk….hmmm hmmm thinking how it must have tasted :)
And i am also trying to visualize pirate hat. You would have posted a pic of that too :)

And now i want to read about how did you confuse that waiter? :@

  4. Aledys Ver says:

Any chances of a “vacature” for a new family member (say…. long lost “tante” or sth like that) so that I can join in your Holland adventures next year? :D

  5. Just a Plane Ride Away says:

My life seems positively dull as compared with yours! I’ll skip the mosquito headbanging and rollercoaster twittering, though ;-)

That boat trip in Den Bosch sounds interesting!!

  6. Invader_Stu says:

Lopa – Despite my father ‘recommendation’ I would avoid trying mustard tea. I hope to write about the pancake incident soon.

Aledys Ver – Are you sure you want to inflict that upon yourself? :p

Just a Plane Ride Away – The Den Bosch boat trip was really fun. It’s really worth seeing if you are ever back in Holland.

  7. Dragonlady says:

You forgot that Valley P met Dragonlady and the Dragon Keeper. It was a great week, evn all the boat trips were fun.

  8. kiki says:

You were bitten by a monkey?????
That may be the coolest thing i’ve ever heard. Ever.
I didn’t read the rest of the post, i was too excited about the monkey biting thing (sorry if the experience wasn’t actually that exciting, but more painful).
I need to calm down and then come back and read the rest of this post.
Holy sh*t. You were bitten by a monkey.

  9. Pinay in Dutchland says:

Your blog is the funniest. I love it. Im following.

  10. Andrew says:

Sounds like a fantastic week! Is that Moriarty in the top right? Den Bosch sounds fantastic.. and I really hope Leiden was nice.. I hope there’s no pirates on the canal while I’m there.

  11. Jules says:

Sounds like a great time! I can’t wait for your stories!

  12. orangesplaash says:

I can understand the driving bit since I am used to hearing the same whenever keys are handed over to me:) And I agree, pancake story sounds fun!

  13. French Bean says:

Stu, Moriarty didn’t have rabies, did he???

And just to ask: what does Dutch mustard taste like? For some reason, when I think of mustard outside of the U.S., I can only imagine the burning Dijonnaise kind. If your Dad didn’t notice much of a difference, then I would assume the mustard was *not* strong.

And, yes. You hunted down a giraffe. You are now a man. ^.^

  14. Robert says:

I had been to Apenheul when I visited Holland a few years back. It was a fun experience. I think I know the monkey you are talking about. He tried to steal my phone. I managed to escape unbitten luckily.

  15. Invader_Stu says:

Kiki – It was only a soft bite. He did not break the skin. More of a nibble really but it still took me very much by surprise.

Pinay in Dutchland – Thank you. I’m glad you like it.

Andrew – Yes. Just look at the evil hidden behind his cute little face but don’t look him directly in the eye. You might turn to stone.

orangesplaash – Do you have a ‘history’ with driving to?

French Bean – No… I mean I don’t think so… I hope not… Do you think he had it? Oh god he had it! HELP ME!

I’m not really sure how Dutch mustard is different from American mustard. I’m not really sure how to describe it.

Robert – I knew he must have had a history of crime. The little scoundrel.

  16. French Bean says:

If you start foaming that the mouth, go see a doctor…

  17. Invader Stu says:

French Bean – I hope it was not a rage virus monkey

  18. The Envoy says:

I find the picture of the tree irresistibly cute.

  19. Invader_Stu says:

The Envoy – It talks as well and tells fairy tale stories

  20. mub says:

I’m dying to go to the Apenheul… because… MONKEYS!!! Even if they are evil and try to steal your camera and bite you ;)

The tour of Den Bosch is really quite interesting, I want to take my parents there too!

  21. Invader Stu says:

Mub – Both are great. You should really check them out.
