I think I have kept you all in suspense long enough. The stories which I have been sharing with you over the last few weeks have all been part of a television appearance on BNN. I was contacted by someone from the show 24/7 (after they saw my interview in Het Parool) and asked if I would like to talk about my blog and life in Holland on the show.

A few things you’ll notice about the finished video include:
1) Very little of what I have written about made it into the final piece (but having read the stories maybe you have already figured out why).
2) I have a beard. This might shock and disturb some viewers and keep you awake at night. For those of you who might have previously missed it this fact once came up in the famous debate; Should Cartoon Stu Have a Beard?

Enjoy. If the embedded video does not work you can click here.

I hoped you liked it. In a few days I’ll also have my appearance on the English Breakfast Radio Show to share with you.

  1. Priscilla Oostrom says:

    Great! Looking forward to it…
Dissappointed that they translated ‘Dutch circle party’ into ‘stoelendans’ (musical chairs). Shows that they don’t see anything strange about a ‘party’ with chairs in a circle. ;-)

  2. Breigh says:

haha that was great, I loved the segment about trying to cross the street, so true!

  3. Iooryz says:

It’s nice to finally be able to see what it’s all about. Do you prefer Dutch or English comments, if you want to learn the language?

And, you don’t look the way I imagined. But that’s ok ;)

  4. Invader Stu says:

Priscilla – I had not thought of it like that. I think you’re right. To them it just seems normal.

Breigh – I had to do that about five times :)

Iooryz – Dutch is fine. I always have Google translate :p And thank you for taking the shock well :)

  5. Well done! Love the part about Dutch waiters ignoring the bar patrons hahah!

  6. Laura says:

Wow this is really nice! I’m disappointed though that they translated Dutch circle parties as stoelendans. Do you know what that is? I simply think they haven’t read the article about Dutch circle parties, which is a shame because it’s genius.

  7. Alison says:

I hope you had to redo the bitterballen part numerous tasty times. :)

  8. Invader Stu says:

Lily – That was the most embarrassing part to film :)

Laura – I don’t think they did. I think they don’t realize that a circle party is not normal.

Alison – I did. And in the first take I did it much more over the top and ended up burning my mouth :s

  9. Terri says:

It was really interesting to finally see the film, especially knowing all the back story bits. And I never pictured you with a beard! Not that I thought you looked like cartoon Stu or anything…

  10. Yay! We see the video at last! :D Awesome!

  11. Kendar of the North says:

Heya, just randomly happened across this today. Funny. I’ve been here 8 years and have felt the same way about many things; excpet maybe my love for bitterballen; deep friend mystery meats only really appeal to me after a night of heavy drinking. It seems all buitenlanders from all over the world come together with the fact that we all notice their “Dutchisms.” (for clarity I don’t mean that in a bad way). I just find it funny…. was all… Gonna try to catch up on your blog. Cheers.

  12. Fabio says:

fabulous!!! did you have your bitter ballen in Cocos, of all bars? :D

  13. suus says:

Wow, Stu. You’re a… a ginger! Who knew!

    ;)

  14. Belle says:

Thanks for posting that! I agree with the rest: you do look different from what I imagined, but I must say the look really suits you :)

I hate the circle parties! People just park their behinds on a chair and don’t move for the rest of the evening! I guess it is thought impolite not to provide seating for your guests and then it happens naturally: if you provide seating people will inevitably…. sit down.

I have tried to find ways around it, like not provide enough seating (thus resulting in a natural musical chairs), but people find ways around my way around and still manage to all sit down somehow. Drat! ;)

  15. Dutch Treat says:

Congrats! I am a long time reader but have never commented. I enjoy your views about the Dutch, because my family and I are Dutch but I have never lived in Holland. I love all the observations and most of the time, my response is I never thought of it that way!

  16. Invader Stu says:

Invader Stu – I like to keep people guessing :p

Barb – Glad you liked it :)

Kendar of the North – Hi Kendar. Welcome to the blog. I agree with you that bitterballen are better when drunk :)

Fabio – Close. We were in St Jame’s Gate just one or two doors down.

Suus – I’m also English. Bet you didn’t see that coming :p

Belle – Thank you very much indeed :) My wife tried something simualr with a circle party. She put the chairs in two separate parts of the room so people would have to move around and mingle… All they did was bring all the chairs into one room and sit down.

Dutch Treat – Thank you. I’m glad you like the blog :)

  17. Jules says:

LOL, I’m amazed that you’re allowed back in Amsterdam after filming the bar scene!

  18. Invader Stu says:

Jules – I’m still waiting for them to kick me out.

  19. Wow, this is wonderful! You’re getting all of the attention you deserve to receive with your great blog! Big round of applause!!! Keep it up – I hope more great things begin to happen for you via this outlet, and in the meantime I have A LOT of catching up to do with your blog! Off to the reading I go :-)
