Four Years of Blogging

Four years of blogging
Four years of blogging. 216 Posts. 134 Cartoons. 3447 Comments.

Ok. Technically I was not writing for one of those four years but this blog is still four years old and I’ve been living in Holland for nine years. I get a lot of fun out of writing this blog and creating the cartoons for it and it makes me very happy to know that people like you enjoy reading it too. Thank you to all of you, old readers and new.

Why not check out the story that started it all. The tale of how I accidentally and unexpectedly ended up living in Holland: An Unexpected Beginning.

…and some of my other personal favourites:

  • Dye Another Day – How and why I once got my eye lashes dyed.
  • Lift of Terror – What I did while trapped in a lift for four hours.
  • I Do – A lovely story about how I got married… for just one day.
  • Administrative Error – What happens when you forget to get registered in Holland.
  • Confusing and Baffling – The title says it all.
  • Train Ticket Criminal – Never forget to buy a train ticket… never!
  • Putting My Foot in It – How I once mistook some tourists for a group of prostitutes.
  • … and many, many more that I can’t all list here.

    Stuart

Stuart is an accident prone Englishman who has been living in the Netherlands since 2001. Even his move to the country was an unintentional accident, the result of replying to a cryptic job advertisement he found one day in a local British magazine. Since then he has learned to love the Dutch (so much so that he married one of them) and now calls the country home. He started the blog Invading Holland in 2006 as a place to share his strange stories of language misunderstandings, cultural confusions and his own accident prone nature.

      Hi Stu,

Congrats! I remember writing a comment when you stopped (which I now can’t find, so this may be not what I said exactly) that I was dreadfully disappointed as your blog was one of the more interesting ones that I read. I’m one of these people who can’t get into scrapes, so I read with a lot of incredulity.

I arrived in Holland three years ago yesterday (so have been writing for just over 3.5 years now — almost as long) and am also preparing an anniversary post for this week. Your picture makes me think I should find a picture of some orange-coloured cake or something …

      Cheers,
      Nicole

Congratulations, Stu! I was having drinks with a couple of fellow expat-bloggers down here yesterday and we all got talking about blogs that we enjoy reading (excitingly self-referential group that we are). Yours was a consistent favorite, everyone can cite a few stories that stick in their mmemory (I’m still a fan of the Sinterklaaas hunt). Thanks for the many smiles!

Gefeliciteerd! Easily one of the most entertaining blogs I’ve ever read. The addition of the cartoons is the icing on the cake! Congrats and I hope you don’t take any more years off any time soon!

Dave – Thank you and you are welcome :)That is one of my favourites too. I was just having so much trouble not making the list too long.

Alison – Thank you and I’m not planning to take a break any time soon. blogging is too addictive :)

Four years in Holland! Whatever crime you commit, you can plead insanity.

Bart – It’s four years of the blog but it’s a total of nine years of living in Holland for me.

Congratulations – I still think the lift story is my favourite, but I’ll re-cap on the others. I’m going up to Clog Land today for the rest of the week if you fancy cycling to Maastricht ;)

I’ve just read “Lift of Terror” and this completely changed my opinion about lifts. I was once locked in a huge office building garage in Amsterdam. HORRIBLE !!
