Stuart

Stuart is an accident prone Englishman who has been living in the Netherlands since 2001. Even his move to the country was an unintentional accident, the result of replying to a cryptic job advertisement he found one day in a local British magazine. Since then he has learned to love the Dutch (so much so that he married one of them) and now calls the country home. He started the blog Invading Holland in 2006 as a place to share his strange stories of language misunderstandings, cultural confusions and his own accident prone nature.

You’re been very fruity this month. Is this a hint?

  2. Bart says:

Does not explain why Dutch people are so fond of ‘Broodje kroket’

  3. Invader Stu says:

AstridQK – Wow. I had not even thought of that. There is obviously something going on deep in my psyche

Bart – I love the stuff and I can’t explain it either.

  4. Does that also apply to mangoes? A life without mangoes isn’t very nice…

This explains Dutch cuisine very well. “You mean it’s something we don’t traditionally have in Holland? Well screw THAT!”

I’ve been in the Netherlands for 2 months now (coming from a southern-european country with great cooking) and at the moment anything that reminds me of my new Dutch friends and FOOD leaves me disturbed and anxious to the point of wanting to run to that Alprazolam stash I keep stashed for a “really stressful moment”.

I love the Dutch so far, but loving – and mastering – food is definitely not one of their strengths.

Fortunately, they are happy, because they do not really understand what they are missing. And I on the other hand am having some fun discovering some pearls like the native Dutch Speculoos drug you taught me about – which surprisingly seems indeed even more potent than the other popular Dutch award-winning export, White Widow.

Barb – Hhhmmmm. Good point. I can’t remember the last time I had a mango.

Yvette – And to think the English have based their whole cuisine around the other way around. “You mean it’s something we don’t have? Give it! It’s ours now!” (I’m mainly thinking of Curry.)

Beowulf.pt – Welcome to the Netherlands. I sometimes wonder who has the most imagination when it comes to food. The Dutch or the English (Not counting food we’ve nicked from other cultures).

Thats a very American looking farmer, I’ve never really noticed that the Dutch don’t seem to go for fruit that much except on pancakes.

  9. Invader_Stu says:

Dragonlady – It’s not really about fruit. It’s a proverb that means a stick in the mud won’t try anything new. The pinapple was just something I chose while drawing the cartoon.

  10. Fabio says:

    haha amazing cartoon!

  11. Sabrina says:

We have the exact same in German :) Was der Bauer nicht kennt, isst er nicht. Love the little cartoon!

The Dutch do like to take something foreign and turn it into their own. Broodje shoarma, tulips, the spices in speculaas (not speculoos, that’s Belgian), all of it foreign stuff turned into something ‘typical Dutch’.
